The Cowardly Lion

This is part of a series I did for the 2012 Montserrat Illustration Theme Show. (Montserrat College of Art is my alma mater.) The theme this year was The Wizard of Oz.

I wanted to keep it simple, so I did a series of spot illustrations. Just character sketches, really. I also did a limited palette for each painting. One color for the character, a little detail of red, and a little bit of yellow brick road underneath.

I felt like doing a four-legged Cowardly Lion, but I still wanted him to hold his tail like in the movie. I also realize that out of the four main characters, this is the only one who's really showing the personality flaw that needs wizardly attention. I mean, I didn't make Scarecrow or Tin Man particularly brainless or heartless. I guess if your flaw is built into your name, you're kinda screwed.
